Canadian Wireless Industry Structures for Wi-Fi™ Growth
Inter-Carrier agreement will set standards for Wi-Fi interoperability in Canada

OTTAWA - August 21, 2003 - Canada's national wireless carriers, Bell Mobility (including Aliant Mobility), Microcell Solutions (Fido), Rogers™ AT&T Wireless™ and TELUS Mobility, today announced an agreement to establish common standards for roaming and interoperability among public Wi-Fi™ hotspots they operate and from their next generation wireless networks to those hotspots.

The objective of the agreement, the first of its kind in North America, is to provide the more than 12 million wireless subscribers in Canada simple and convenient access to public Wi-Fi hotspots. The carriers will continue to vigorously compete with each other, both for customers and Wi-Fi hotspot locations.

"Wi-Fi is a natural extension to the ubiquitous wireless voice and data services offered by the licensed public wireless carriers across Canada," said Peter Barnes, President and CEO of the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA), which facilitated the co-operative agreement. "By developing standards of service and interconnection, the carriers will ensure Canadians have secure and convenient access to Wi-Fi hotspots without requiring new network identities or billing arrangements."

Today's announcement provides the first step toward the development of much-needed standards and cross-carrier roaming capabilities for Canadian Wi-Fi users. Common standards introduced by the national Canadian wireless carriers will help to eliminate the development of redundant authentication and billing methods and will lead to consistent, simplified access for customers and stimulate adoption of Wi-Fi.

This agreement is expected to pave the way for future interoperability between the carriers' wireless data networks and their Wi-Fi hotspots, providing seamless integration of both technologies. This would enable customers to connect to the wireless network (depending on their physical proximity to a Wi-Fi hotspot) that would best serve their wireless needs. The carriers aim to have definitive standards and agreements in place by the end of 2003, with implementation providing their wireless customers with simple and convenient access to public Wi-Fi hotspot services in 2004.

"Much like the Canadian intercarrier messaging agreement provided a tremendous boost to adoption of text messaging in Canada, today's announcement is expected to significantly increase the adoption rates of Wi-Fi in Canada," added Barnes.

What is Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi hotspots communicate with a wirelessly enabled (based on the 802.11 technology standards) device over a wireless LAN (local area network), enabling mobile professionals, business travellers and consumers to wirelessly access the Internet, e-mail and corporate networks in public locations without the need for a physical landline connection. As long as a user is within a 50 to 200 metre radius of a Wi-Fi hotspot, they can take advantage of the services. Thousands of hotspots are now being built in transportation hubs, hotels, food-service locations and commercial properties across Canada.
